Picture Book Switzerland
This blog has more pictures than text. Enjoy the pictures and a 4 minute Swiss Drone movie flying over Luzern.
We spent wonderful days in Switzerland doing what we like most, being outdoors and hiking.
Switzerland has 60,000km (37,000 miles) of marked trails. This shows you how serious we, the Swiss, are about “our” national sport. Wherever you go, you will find those famous yellow hiking signs. When you leave a train station, bus station, parking lot, or arrive at the top of a mountain, you will find these hiking signs. Whether you want to do a short or a very long hike, steep and difficult or easy, the signs show you the time and distance to your final destination. On your way, you will always find markers. They help you know you are on the right path. I truly wish we would have a similar system here in the US.
Another beauty of hiking in Switzerland is that you can get to almost every hilltop or mountain, even if you don’t want to hike. That’s because there is a huge network of cable cars or mountain trains that take you up into the fresh air. Once on the top, I guarantee there will be a hut or restaurant with fresh local food.
The Swiss are very innovative. Just look at the first-in-the-world and only cable car designed as a Cabrio. To do this, it needed a totally new design of masts and cables.
On this trip we spent most of our time in the Innerschweiz (Central part of Switzerland) and the Jura.
[If you have 4 minutes, this is an incredibly beautiful Swiss drone movie of Luzern, my home town]
The Swiss Jura is one of the three distinct geographical regions of Switzerland, the other being the Swiss Mittelland (Swiss plateau) and the Swiss Alps. The Swiss Jura has been industrialized since the 18th century and became a major center of the watchmaking industry. In tiny villages you find companies like Longines, Rolex, and Omega, just to mention 3 of them.
The area has several cities at high altitudes, such as La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle and St.Croix (renowned for its musical boxes). The Jura is famous for its rolling hills.
Thinking of visiting Switzerland one day? Please let me know I am happy to give you some “insider” tips.
Of Wederluege, Au Revoir, Addio, A Revair. All say the same for goodbye in the four languages Switzerland has. Swiss-German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
