Skiing in the Swiss Alps, Zermatt. – Part 2: Food

March 17, 2014By 11

In my last blog you saw the wonderful mountains around Zermatt. As I wrote, skiing is just one part of the beauty of being in Zermatt.

Food is another part. I lived in Switzerland for over 40 years and skied in many different places in my home country. Food is good in most of the ski resorts, but what you find in Zermatt is really beyond anything you can imagine.

When Cindy and I flew Swiss Airline from New York to Zürich, the inboard magazine had an article about Zermatt and the food. It read:

From December 2013 to February 2014 SWISS First Class passengers on intercontinental flights departing from Switzerland will be able to enjoy savory culinary delights from Zermatt. Awarded with 14 GaultMillau points, the gourmet restaurant Findlerhof is located in the small hamlet of Findeln. The breathtaking view over the Matterhorn brings guests from all over the world to this place. Guests in Swiss Business enjoy fine cuisine from a restaurant Chez Vrony in Findeln. It is one of the few restaurants still serving their own organic products from cattle which are fed nothing but alpine grass.

If you cannot afford Swiss First or Business Class – like we can’t – you still enjoy its wonderful cuisine while skiing in Zermatt.  There are wonderful restaurants all over the mountain –  on one side you have cozy restaurants in Blatten or Zum See. Skiing over to Italy? Wow, there you get the best Italian food you can imagine. Yes it is not free but you can have a delicious lunch for $20 – $25.-

If you are a person who loves to enjoy the moment, skiing in Switzerland, and in particular in Zermatt, is the place for you. It offers more than just counting how many runs you did during the day. It offers more than just french fries with a lukewarm hamburger or hot dog between a tasteless bread, eating with plastic knives and forks …. or with your fingers. Here they serve you porcelain with silverware and the fine wine is in a glass and if you prefer a cool beer you feel the glass on your lips not a cheap plastic cup.

Skiing here is a whole experience. Dreamlike nature, incredible scenery, great skiing and delicious food. Food presented and prepared with love.
